Industry Leaders Take Part in National Golf Day

Representatives from the National Golf Course Owners Association recently joined other We Are Golf coalition members on Capitol Hill for the seventh annual National Golf Day. Golf’s leaders met with legislators throughout the day to share stories about the game’s approximately 15,000 diverse, small businesses, which employ more than 2 million people and provide $55.6 billion in annual wage income. In addition, industry executives discussed golf courses’ positive influences on ecology, tax revenues and tourism. They even explained how walking 18 holes can burn 2,000 calories.

“National Golf Day allows the golf industry to work together with lawmakers on the issues that impact our businesses and the industry as a whole,” says Mike Hughes, CEO of the NGCOA. “It’s become evident that our leaders in Washington understand the widespread economic impact of golf and are committed to joining us to help our membership through legislative action.”

Hughes was joined in Washington by NGCOA membership director Joe Rice; Matt Galvin, NGCOA president and president of Morningstar Golf & Hospitality; Bob Swiger, principal with Raspberry Golf Management; Keith Miller, CEO of the Montgomery County (MD) Revenue Authority; and David Norman, executive director of the Mid-Atlantic Golf Course Owners Association.

This year’s National Golf Day featured a day-long exhibit in the Cannon Caucus Room with live lessons for members of Congress and staff from 2012 PGA Teacher of the Year Michael Breed, host of “The Golf Fix” on Golf Channel, and LPGA professional Dana Rader. Special exhibits and activities included a “Closest to the Pin” contest utilizing an aboutGolf simulator; state-of-the-art swing analysis from GolfTEC; Birdie Ball, the latest at-home training technology; and a Republican versus Democrat “Putting Challenge.” The biggest takeaway from National Golf Day 2013 was that all owners and operators need to work together and get involved with local, state and federal governments for the greater good of the industry. “We stood together in D.C. to represent the 2 million men and women whose livelihoods depend on the golf industry,” says Steve Mona, CEO of World Golf Foundation and administrator of We Are Golf. “Our unified voice helps Congressional members better understand the profound influence golf has on the American economy.”

Other organizations that participated in National Golf Day included the Club Managers Association of America, Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, Ladies Professional Golf Association, PGA of America, PGA Tour, United States Golf Association, United States Golf Manufacturers Council and World Golf Foundation.
